St Ronan’s finish strongly in MacRory tie

St Ronan’s Lurgan 3-11 St Patrick’s Armagh 3-6
St Ronan’s Lurgan pulled away in the third quarter to claim the points in this Armagh derby tie in the Danske Bank MacRory Cup in terrible weather conditions in St Paul’s Lurgan.
Armagh had the elements in their favour at the start and Michael Conroy hit two early points. However St Ronan’s defence was doing pretty well and once the forwards settled, they built up a 2-3 to 0-2 lead.
They were helped by a penalty award after 15 minutes when Josh Megoran was grounded and Tiarnan Kelly stroked home from the spot. Four minutes later Kelly added his second goal.
However St Patrick’s got back into the game with two goals close to the break. Firstly Oisin Hughes fisted a high ball to the net and then a mix up in the Lurgan defence was punished with the ball quickly transferred to Seamus Muldoon for an interval score-line of 2-3 to 2-2.
Lurgan pulled away on the resumption with points from Eoin McConville and impressive wing half back Jamie Haughey who went on to record four points on the break for this team.
Jack Leneghan banged home a 38th minute goal, but it seemed to lift their opponents and Muldoon’s second goal, a fine effort in the 43rd minute, closed the gap to 3-5 to 3-3.
St Ronan’s however found their second wind and pushed on with a series of points in the third quarter for a 3-11 to 3-7 scoreline.
The other game scheduled for Saturday morning, St Michael’s Enniskillen v St Paul’s Bessbrook, fell victim to the weather.
