Danske Bank McGreevy Cup final

St Colman’s Newry 1-4 St Patrick’s Armagh 1-1

IT WASN’T high-scoring nor pretty, but that will not take away from St Colman’s Newry’s enjoyment of lifting the Danske Bank McGreevy Cup in wet and windy St Paul’s Lurgan yesterday evening.

The young hurlers on both teams performed extremely well in adverse weather conditions as St Colman’s overturned a three-points league defeat earlier in the campaign and also bounced back from losing last season’s decider to St Patrick’s Keady.

St Colman’s were the better all-round team, despite a Herculean effort from Lee Murtagh and Sean McVerry for the Armagh team.

The Violet Hill team went into a four points lead in the opening 20 minutes with two points from the impressive James Dougan and one each from Niall Husarz and Paudie Clancy.

Clancy and Dan McCarthy were controlling the middle of the park at this stage, but McVerry made his presence felt and that led to an Armagh goal on 23 minutes from Pearse Donnelly.

Armagh drew level during the third quarter with Donnelly pointing a free, but PJ Hughes and Aaron Norris closed off their route to goal and, after a further bout of pressure, St Colman’s won a 51st minute penalty that Dougan fired to the net and his side held out for an historic win.
