Danske Bank MacRory Cup

St Macartan’s Monaghan 2-10 St Patrick’s Dungannon 1-12

St MACARTAN’s Monaghan know that they rode their luck a little in this Danske Bank MacRory Cup tie in Truagh yesterday.

St Patrick’s Academy created a lot of openings, but kicked 15 wides over the hour. Despite that statistic, Daniel Kerr had an injury-time opportunity to win the game when put through one-on-one with the goalie, Liam Quinn.

But Quinn got down to smother his shot and get the ball to safety ahead of the final whistle. A minute or two earlier Quinn had turned James Donnelly’s goal-bound effort over for a point as the Academy stepped up the pressure.

However St Macartan’s made good use of their periods in ascendancy and will feel that they deserved to hang on for the points.

They opened well with scores from Shane McMahon and Remy McKenna before McKenna fired home the opening goal in the 10th minute.

The Academy however came back well and were level at 1-2 to 0-5 by the end of the first quarter and then traded points with the Sem for an interval score-line of 1-4 to 0-7.

A minute into the second half however St Macartan’s got what turned out to be a match-winning break. A high ball was not properly dealt with by the Academy goalkeeper and Sem full-back James McKenna forced the loose ball home from close range.

Shane McMahon (2) and Jamie McCarrey added points before Mark Quinn’s 43rd minute goal pulled the Academy back into contention at 2-7 to 1-9.

However Padraig Finnan and Dean McGuigan opened it up to 2-10 to 1-10 after Ryan Coleman and Darragh Hughes had traded points.

In a hectic finish the Academy laid siege to the Monaghan goals, but only managed points each from Jude Campbell and James Donnelly before time ran out on them.

St Macartan’s: Remy McKenna 1-1, James McKenna 1-0, Shane McMahon 0-4, Jamie McCarey 0-2, Darragh Hughes 0-1, Padraig Finnan 0-1, Dean McGuigan 0-1

St Patrick’s : Mark Quinn 1-1, Ryan Coleman 0-3, Jude Campbell 0-3, Cormac O’Hagan 0-2, Mark Donnelly 0-1, Liam Rafferty 0-1, James Donnelly 0-1.
