In a classic encounter Coláiste Cholmcille, Ballyshannon are through to the Danske Bank U19 Markey Cup final after extra-time and penalties against St Patrick’s, Keady.

In a game that swung back and forth, there was just no separating these teams at Garvaghey on Friday. In the end Coláiste Cholmcille goalkeeper Aaron Cullen was a hero, saving four penalties, while captain Ryan Barrett stepped up to fire home two kicks from the spot.
The former Donegal minor ‘keeper saved the first three Keady penalties while Ryan Barrett converted the first for Coláiste Cholmcille. But when the five players from both sides had stepped up, it was all square at 2-2.
Then in sudden death, Cullen saved the sixth Keady spot kick and that left Barrett to step up and fire the Ballyshannon side to the final.
The game will be remembered for the grit and determination of both sides, excellent refereeing from Mickey McCarron and some wonderful scores, not least by Keady’s Tomas Galvin, who kicked 10 of their scores, the last of which was an outrageous effort with his left from the left hand side near the sideline.
Coláiste Cholmcille had the wind at their backs in the opening half and really should have been well ahead at half-time, limiting St Patrick’s to the opening point from Galvin, which came after 10 minutes.
After 16 minutes Coláiste led Keady 7-5 in wides and by half-time their tally would reach 10. But Jack Gallagher levelled from a 48m free on 17 minutes and Shane Delahunty, who was a real threat for the winners, hit the side netting after a brilliant run. He would win the kick-out and found Gallagher, who went for a point but the ball dropped in just under the crossbar for the opening goal.
Good work by Gero Gilmartin set up Anton Govorov for another point on 23 minutes while Jack Gallagher won and pointed the final score of the half in the first minute of added time. Just before that Eoghan Kelly got back to make a goal-saving challenge on a Keady player.

With the wind at their backs, the Keady side started brightly with a Galvin free after 50 seconds. Shane Delahunty converted at the other end after another gut busting run, but Keady began to gain a foothold around midfield, winning most of the kick-outs. Tomas Galvin hit two points (one ‘45’), captain Fabio Moriera pointed a free and Galvin cut the lead to the minimum with another free on 44 minutes.
Eoghan Kelly combined with Jack Gallagher for the latter to score but Keady were back on terms on 55 minutes when Sean Woods and Shea Carr found the range. Kyle McNulty was denied a goal for Coláiste by a great save and Anton Govorov went for a goal when a point was a better option.
It looked bad for the Ballyshannon boys when Galvin hit points in the 57th and 60th minute for a two point lead.
But two minutes into added time a ‘45’ by Jack Gallagher hit the upright high up and bounced down in front of the goal. Eoghan Kelly got the final touch and suddenly Coláiste Cholmcille were a point up.
But it was fitting that it was Tomas Galvin who stepped up to the mark to fire over the equaliser with the final play in the 65th minute.
In added time Kyle McNulty had a point for the winners but Keady replied with three scores from Padraic Morgan, Sean Woods and Tiernan Tohill. A Jack Gallagher free left Keady just a point ahead at half-time in extra-time.
Galvin would add to that lead early in the second period but Coláiste Cholmcille showed some grit with captain Ryan Barrett leading by example. Jack Gallagher pointed a free and after a magnificent Eoghan Kelly block, Gallagher levelled matters with just minutes of time left.
Again Tomas Galvin fired Keady in front with a magnificent point off his left. The Ballyshannon boys came forward again to win a free. Jack Gallagher’s effort was short but it broke to Kyle McNulty to send a wonderful contest to penalties.
Apart from the excellent Galvin, Keady’s best were Padraic Morgan, Cathal Donnelly, Sean Woods and Fabio Moriera.
Coláiste Cholmcille had heroes all over the field from ‘keeper Cullen, James Monaghan, the entire half-back line; the Sweenys, Kyle McNulty and Jack Gallagher.
