ABBEY Vocational School became the fourth side from Donegal to win the Danske Bank MacLarnon Cup when they emerged double-scores winners over a gallant Our Lady and St Patrick’s Knock outfit at Box-IT Athletic Grounds in Armagh yesterday afternoon.
Backboned by a dozen players from Ulster minor champions Four Masters, the Tir Chonaill side were warm favourites for the silverware and they didn’t disappoint. They led by seven points at the break and, in truth, already had one hand on the trophy.
A lot of credit must go to Knock, though, who made them fight hard for it in the second period.
Abbey, however, always looked to be in control. And while they hit eight second half wides they had done enough to win it with midfielder Kevin Muldoon’s injury-time goal putting the icing on the cake.
The winners dominated from the start and, while it took them a while to get going on the scoreboard, they were full value for their 1-7 to 0-3 interval advantage.
The Donegal lads had five attacks in the opening half-a-dozen minutes that yielded nothing and, in fact, it was Knock who opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a fine effort from distance from Owen McHugh.
As the half wore on, though, Abbey got on top throughout the field – especially in the middle third when, time and time again, they broke up Knock attacks before their pace proved difficult to contend with.
A flowing move resulted in an equaliser from Conor Meehan to begin a purple patch for the eventual winners
Conor McCahill hit an outstanding point with the outside of his boot and Meehan converted a brace of frees with full-forward Aaron McGroarty on target from play.
A strong run from Turlough Carr resulted in another well-worked score from out on the right wing before their goal arrived in the 26th minute.
Midfielder Tiarnan McBride played the ball inside to Carr who in turn sent McCahill through on goal. He made no mistake with a thumping finish to the net past Knock goalkeeper Ciaran O’Neill.
The hard-working Kevin Muldoon then got in on the act with a quality score and, at this stage, Knock were struggling to get the ball out of their own half.
Knock, though, did finish the half with a flourish with fine scores from McHugh and full-back Conor Boyle.
Team captain Seanan Carr opened the second half scoring with a point from distance and it took a good save from Knock netminder Ciaran O’Neill to prevent a goal from Kevin Muldoon.
Knock then enjoyed their best spell of the game with points from substitute Colm McKee as well as two frees from Liam Blaney to cut the gap to five with 12 minutes left to play.
Abbey, though, didn’t panic with captain Carr leading the way with a brilliant fisted point after cutting in from the left wing.
Meehan then scored from a markbefore Knock’s Blaney pinned on another brace.
With the game in injury-time player-of-the-match Muldoon closed the match out in style with a clinical finish low to the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

Joe Shields determined to seize opportunity for OSLP, Knock
Like their opponents this will be Our Lady and St Patrick’s College, Knock’s first ever time to take the field in a Danske Bank MacLarnon Cup decider but it won’t be the first time that they have reached the decider.
That’s because they made it through to the 2019/20 final against St Pius X, Magherafelt, but the game was never played due to Covid. It makes this Sunday’s final even more important and their manager Joe Shields is looking forward to it.
“We are eagerly looking forward to the final especially as the only other time we got this far it was cancelled at the last minute due to Covid,” Shields said.
“We are delighted to get back after just a couple of years. We have only played in something like three or four semi finals this past 30 years so it’s a massive occasion for the payers as well as the entire school community.
The boys are buzzing ahead of the game. We just about got over the line in the semi-final against Rathmore Grammar and now we have the biggest day in the schools GAA history to look forward to.
You want the boys to go out and enjoy themselves on the day but at the same time its crucial to play the game and not the occasion. You don’t want to change too much about how you play and while obviously we are coming up against a strong side we want the boys to just embrace it and do what they can and play the football that they have been playing all year to date.”
Shields acknowledges that Abbey Vocational School will go into the decider as warm favourites but that is something that he isn’t concerned about.
“We know that we will go into the game as underdogs but that doesn’t unduly worry us,” he said.
“I have heard a lot of good things about this Abbey side who are obviously backboned by the successful Four Masters team. Its just one of those things, there has to be a favourite on the day and we are happy for them to have that tag, we have no issue going in as underdogs.

All I ever ask the boys to do is go out and give it 100 per cent and don’t come off the pitch wishing you had done this or done that, have no regrets.
“We know that they are a very good side but we like to concentrate on our own game and make sure we get things right. On the day its 15 against 15, it’s a final and we will go and try our best and if we come out on top I will be delighted.”
Knock have beaten three fellow Belfast sides in the competition so far this season with all three of them being close affairs and be believes those tests have stood to his players.
“We had two close derby games against Aquinas and St Mary’s in the group stages and both of those schools beat us last year so we were able to get our own back this time and that was important,” he said.
“In the semi final we met yet another Belfast school in Rathmore and that was very tight as well as we had only two points to spare at the final whistle. We do a lot of stuff in training based around the upcoming game when you are a point up or a point down, what are you going to do?
It does work well as when you go into competitive games boys know when to drive forward and when to hold the ball. You learn a lot from winning games, especially close ones, and hopefully our run to the final will stand to us.”

OUR Lady & St Patrick’s Knock will play in the Danske Bank MacLarnon Cup final for the first time after coming from behind in the ten minutes after half time last night in the Belfast derby at Coláiste Feirste.
They played against the breeze in the opening half and that handed the initiative to last year’s beaten finalists Rathmore Grammar who raced into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead after 19 minutes.
Sé Ferris opened their account before Owen McHugh fisted a reply. However between the 10th and 19th minutes Rathmore added scores from Isaac Robinson, Oscar Conlon, Thomas Lloyd and Rory McErlean (free).
Knock were under pressure during this period but they broke for a crucial goal with Thomas McCusker picking out Oran Donaldson who fed to Liam Blaney to side-foot home.
Rathmore hit back with three points before the break through Ferris, goal-keeper Donncha McGurk and another McErlean free. But their lead of four points at the turnover looked dangerous, given the strength of the breeze and they could have done with a goal when Michael Morgan hit the post after 17 minutes.
Knock were right back in the frame shortly after the re-start with a free from Blaney and a shot from Oran Donaldson both on target. Blaney added another point from a free and Luke Doran dropped over an angled free to bring the teams level.
Just over 60 seconds later Knock hit the jackpot with Owen O’Neill’s kick pass into the path of Donaldson resulting in a bullet to the roof of the net. The momentum of the game had changed completely.
Eoin Phillips eventually got a Rathmore point, but Knock were controlling the play and Blaney responded with a point. McErlean’s free left two points between the sides for the final ten minutes but Rathmore couldn’t follow it up with a goal to get them through to the decider.
The second semi-final between Abbey Vocational from Donegal town and St Patrick’s Downpatrick will throw in at 4pm on Monday afternoon in Garvaghey.

ABBEY Vocational School from Donegal town sent out a message to the three teams remaining in the Danske Bank MacLarnon Cup with this comfortable quarter-final victory over Aquinas at Garvaghey.
They led by 2-6 to 0-1 at the break and were never going to be reeled in during the second half, despite a penalty strike from Declan McArdle narrowing the gap on the re-start.
For Aquinas it was a tale of two penalties. The first one came after Abbey had taken a three-point lead and might have given them a foothold in the game. However, Daniel McGinty kept his eye on the ball and saved well.
By the time McArdle’s spot kick hit the net after seven minutes of the second half, Abbey were very much in control and were able to kick on with a series of points.
Peter Mulgrew registered the Belfast side’s only score of the first half in the 20th minute, but by that stage goals from Conor Meehan and Conor McCahill had given Abbey a comfortable lead and they finished out the half with scores from Meehan, Senan Carr and Tiarnan McBride for an advantage of 11 points at the break.
The teams had hit two points each before the second penalty arrived. Although McArdle netted, it made no real impression on the scoreboard and Meehan, who finished with 1-7, and the Carrs kept the scoreboard moving for the Donegal side.
While Ben Christie put in a superb hour for Aquinas, Abbey looked to have a good all-round team with Callum McCrea, Kevin Muldoon and forwards Senan and Turlough Carr and Conor McCahill particularly prominent.
The Donegal side now face St Patrick’s, Downpatrick in the semi-final, with Monday the probably date for that. The first semi-final, an all-Belfast affair between last year’s beaten finalists Rathmore Grammar and Our Lady & St Patrick’s, Knock, goes ahead tomorrow in Coláiste Feirste (4pm).

THE quarter-finals of the Danske Bank MacLarnon Cup began yesterday with Our Lady & St Patrick’s, Knock the first team through to the semi-finals as three first-half goals in Coláiste Feirste yesterday evening opened a gap that St Pius X couldn’t close.
Those goals included a penalty that Luke Doran belted to the top right-hand corner to give Eoin Darragh no chance.
That all meant that Knock led by 3-4 to 0-4 at half-time, with Oisin Doherty hitting three of St Pius X’s points, two from frees.
Magherafelt enjoyed as much possession as Knock, but they missed the target on too many occasions and paid the price for that wayward shooting in both halves.
During the third quarter, Pucci found the net for a second time, while Blaney added two more points with just a point from Cathal Scullion in reply.
Fionn McIvor found the net for St Pius X 10 minutes from time, but sub Mark Guest cancelled it at the other end with his side’s fifth goal.
Knock now meet the winners of tomorrow’s match between Rathmore Grammar and Loreto, Milford (Owenbeg, 1.30pm).
Meanwhile, in the other side of the draw Abbey Vocational from Donegal town, featuring most of the Four Masters side that recently won the St Paul’s minor tournament, are hotly tipped to beat Aquinas.
That game was scheduled for today in Garvaghey but was called off last night and will now be played on Monday at the same venue.
The winners from there will play whoever emerges from the tie between St Patrick’s, Downpatrick and St Mary’s CBGS, Belfast.
That game was scheduled to take place yesterday in Dromara, but was a victim of the snowy weather. It has also been rescheduled for Monday.
The semi-finals are down for decision towards the end of next week.

THE quarter-final line-up in the Danske Bank MacLarnon Cup has been completed with wins for St Pius X, Magherafelt, Aquinas Grammar and Loreto, Milford in the last three play-off games.
St Patrick’s, Downpatrick were already through before the Christmas break after a penalty shoot-out win against St Eunan’s, Letterkenny in Banagher.
A superb 1-10 from Oisín Doherty helped St Pius X defeat Dean Maguirc, Carrickmore 2-13 to 2-8 on the Éire Óg hurling pitch in Carrickmore to set up a quarter-final with Our Lady & St Patrick’s, Knock.
Magherafelt held a lead of two points at the break, 0-6 to 0-4, but within 12 minutes of the re-start Doherty (two), Callum Gribben and Pádraig Donaghy had stretched that lead.
However, goals from Shea Munroe and Davan Loughran and points from Seán Óg Teague and Odhrán Curran turned the game around for the home team to lead by three points with just seven minutes remaining.
Doherty hit back with two points before substitute Cathal Scullion found the net in the 59th minute. Moments later St Pius X made sure of their place in the last eight when Doherty finished to the net.
Aquinas hit the front in the first minute of their game with St Louis, Ballymena when Dáire Oglesby goaled. After a poor first half in which both teams were wayward in their shooting, Aquinas led by 1-1 to 0-2.
The Belfast side doubled their score within 11 minutes of the re-start with a fisted point from David Leggett and then a goal from Fergus Donaghy. With a lead of five points they began to play with a little more freedom and Jack Watson (two), JJ Higgins, Leggett, Con Gileece and Jude Dixon all registered points in a 2-8 to 0-4 victory that takes them into a quarter-final with Abbey Vocational from Donegal town on Thursday (Garvaghey 4pm).
The last of the play-off games saw SRC, Newry outclassed by Loreto, Milford, the north Donegal side running in nine goals to set up a quarter-final with Rathmore Grammar on Friday (Owenbeg, 1.30pm)
The first of the quarter-finals – St Mary’s CBGS, Belfast v St Patrick’s, Downpatrick, had been set for Wednesday but will now be played on Monday in Dromara at 2pm.

McLarnon Cup Play-off – Pre match preview
St. Louis Ballymena v Aquinis Colaiste Feirste 4-00pm Friday
St. Louis Grammar, Ballymena face Aquuinis Belfast tomorrow (Friday) at Colaiste Feirste with a place in ther qurter-final of this year’s McLarnon Cup the prize for the winners.
The Ballymena side have had a good McLarnon campaign to date and in the group stages beat St. Pius Magherafelt and St. Patrick’s Downpatrick but lost to Rathome Grammar to finish second in their group to Rathmore.
St. Louis have a wide spread of players from South West clubs in their panel and a few Antrim minors with representation from All Saints, Cargin, St. Comgall’s, Tir na nOg , Loughgiel, Rasharkin, Glenravel and Dunloy.
John McAtamney, Ryan McKeever, Hugh O’Donnell, Patrick O’Neill, Darach Bradley and Shea O’Brion are just a few of the players who have performed well this year with Cargin man O’Donnell captaining the side and Harry Connon from All Saints is their Vice Captain.
The Kintullagh side have an experienced management team and Antrim County player, Paddy McAleer, Sean Cassidy from Slaughtneil and Neill McNicholl are sure to have their side well prepared.
The winners of tomorrow’s game will meet either Abbey CBS of Donegal or Carrickmore in the quarter-finals so why not come along to Colaiste Feirste on Friday and give the boys your support.

Dean Maguirc College produced a gutsy display at the home of Eire Óg hurlers before losing out to St Pius Magherafelt on a 2-13 to 2-8 scoreline in the Mc Larnon Cup with two late goals from the Derry school securing the win.
St Pius College started well with Conor Martin, Padraig Donaghy and Oisin Doherty leading the way they had the Dean on the back foot for most of the first half. Indeed had they been more clinical early on with their finishing they could have been out of sight at the short whistle.
Three well taken points from Doherty put them on top after less than six minutes. It seemed like the Magherafelt side were going to run away with the game but credit to the Dean they dug deep and with Kevin Cuddy and Shea Munroe leading the line they clawed their way back into the contest and with eighteen minutes of the first half gone led 0-4 to 0-3. However Doherty finished the half with three further points to send his team off at the break leading 0-6 to 0-4.
Dean were back out early for the restart but it was the St Pius lads who started the second half with real purpose. They established a vice like grip across the middle of the field and hit four points in a row to move six clear. The Dean were all at sea but a point from Sean Óg Teague steadied the ship and was followed up quickly by a goal from Shea Munroe. The introduction of Odhran Curran to the game lifted the crowd and the home team and when Curran fired over from a tight angle to leave a point between the two teams it was really game on.
A point from Callum Gribbin made it a two point game again in favour of the Magherafelt school but Sean Óg Teague fired over a point and a goal from Davagh Loughran changed the whole momentum of the game.
Dean goalkeeper Padraig Harvey made three outstanding saves to keep his team in front and another score from Curran stretched the gap to three points. The Derry side was now up against it but they finished the game strongly with two more points from the impressive Doherty and late goals from the wing half forward and substitute Jody Quinn sealed the win and secured a knockout spot for the Derry school.

THE first of the Danske Bank MacLarnon Cup play-off games in Banagher on Friday rose above the atrocious weather to produce an exciting end, extra-time and then the tension of the penalties before the Red High could take their place in the quarter-finals in early January against St Mary’s CBGS, Belfast.

The East Down school had to come from 1-7 to 0-0 down at the break to force extra-time. St Eunan’s failed to score in the second half and that tells more about how strong the wind was than about the ability of two very committed teams.
Aiden Friel raced more than 80 metres on a brilliant solo run that finished with the ball in the back of the Downpatrick net. At the time it felt like a huge score in the conditions. With a lead of 10 points at half time, as long as Letterkenny kept their goal intact, the Donegal boys looked a good bet to get over the line.
However, Downpatrick ate into the lead with points from DJ Farrell, Eoin Murray, Luka Carew and Adam Dorans. Close to the end Farrell popped up for the equaliser to send the teams to extra time at 1-7 to 0-10.
Letterkenny got first use of the elements again, but Farrell scored the first point into the goals at the Dungiven end and the teams turned around still level.
When Eoin Murray and Luke McCabe tagged on points for Downpatrick in the early stages of the second half, they seemed on their way to victory.
Then the game took a late twist with three frees within range for St Eunan’s. Ciarán Cassidy managed to hit the target with two of those and the game went to penalties.
