St Ronan’s Lurgan are the first team to claim a place in the semi-finals of the Danske Bank MacCormack Cup after securing a third straight victory in the MacRory Cup league Section B in Lurgan last evening.

Although opponents Abbey CBS set themselves up with extra men behind the ball, St Ronan’s were three points to the good after 12 minutes of play curtesy of two Kevin McAlinden frees and a point from Jamie Haughey.

Although Ronan Fegan pulled it back to 0-4 to 0-2 by the 23rd minute, St Ronan’s rattled off another two scores before the break and got into their stride again on the re-start with points from McAlinden and Rioghan Meehan.

The nail in the Newry side’s coffin arrived in the 45th minute when Tiarnan Kelly got on the end of a move from St Ronan’s that involved 20 plus passes and the Clann Éireann player slotted the ball to the left corner of the Abbey net.

Ronan Fegan responded with two frees but St Ronan’s were home and hosed with Kelly firing over a late point.

With only St Macartan’s Monaghan to play, St Ronan’s have now claimed one of the four MacCormack Cup semi-final spots, while Omagh CBS are on course for another – and this all before St Patrick’s Maghera or St Mary’s CBGS Belfast have kicked a ball in the competition.

St Ronan’s : Tiarnan Kelly 1-2, Kevin McAlinden 0-4, 0-3 frees, Jamie Haughey 0-1, Sean McAlinden 0-1, Rioghan Meehan 0-1

Abbey CBS : Ronan Fegan 0-4, 0-3 frees
