Danske Bank O’Doherty Cup quarter-final
St Catherine’s, Killybegs 3-10 St Clare’s, Ballyjamesduff 2-8
Gola opportunities missed by one side and goal opportunities taken by the other summed up this Danske Bank O’Doherty Cup quarter-final yesterday afternoon.
St Clare’s created some good openings in both halves but didn’t take them and paid the price against a Killybegs side that showed a lot of potential.
St Clare’s hit the first two points through Patrick Lynch and Mark McSharry, but Killybegs hit a purple patch ten minutes in with three points in succession followed by a goal from Karl Gallagher that saw the Donegal side turn over 1-7 to 0-3 ahead.
Ballyjamesduff tried valiantly to close the gap after the break, but could get no closer than four points to the winners despite John Cooke hitting the net in the 38th minute.
St Catherine’s rallied with a solo goal from Niall Campbell and then a Conor Cunningham cracker only for a goal from Eoin McCaul to tighten the game at to 2-9 to 3-10.
It all came down to the outcome of a 58th minute penalty award which Peter Smith struck well but Corey Byrne in the Killybegs brilliantly saved to rubber-stamp their place in Friday’s semi-final against Letterkenny.
St Catherine’s : Conor Cunningham 1-3, Carl Gallagher 1-2, Niall Campbell 1-0, Jack McSharry 0-3, Odhran McGuinness 0-1.
St Clare’s : Eoin McCaul 1-1, John Cooke 1-0, Patrick Lynch 0-4, Mark McSharry 0-2, Cian McCabe 0-1.
