Masita Michael Cusack Cup semi-finals (Senior C Hurling)
Coláiste Treasa Kanturk 2-23 Holy Rosary Mountbellew 3-12
Boyne CS 3-19 Our Lady’s & St Patrick’s Knock 2-12
BOYNE Community School, coming off the back of an impressive Leinster schools’ championship were much sharper than Our Lady’s and St Patrick’s Knock in this Masita Michael Cusack Cup semi-final in Newry on Sunday afternoon.
Knock, who won the Danske Bank Casement Cup before Christmas found it difficult to make an impression against the Meath school for whom Conor Fitzgerald, James Murray and inside Mikey Cole and Stefan Holzer always posed a problem for the city team made up mostly of players from Down clubs.
Jarlath McCollum in goals was pretty busy throughout the game while Ciarán McMullan declared himself fit after breaking a thumb a couple of weeks ago and had a fine game, moving up from centre-half back during the last quarter to score both Knock goals.
Jacob McDonnell also had a good game and Sean Hughes took his chances well when he got them both from play and frees. However overall Boyne were the more physically imposing team and they made that count in most of the individual battles.
Goals from Mikey Cole and Stefan Holzer in the opening half put Boyne into a 2-9 to 0-7 lead with the respective free-takers James Murray and Sean Hughes contributing well.
Adam Kelly had scored the third Boyne goal to put his team well clear before Ciaran McMullan moved forward to score goals in the 50th and 54th minutes.
However those scores made little impact on the final result and it will be a Meath v Cork final with Coláiste Treasa Kanturk scoring an impressive 2-23 to 3-12 win over Holy Rosary Mounbellew in the other semi-final on Saturday afternoon
