Early Goals Decisive in MacRoryNovember 20, 2019
Danske Bank MacRory Cup
Omagh CBS 2-12 St Ronan’s Lurgan 0-5
A GOAL directly from the throw in and then a second before two minutes had been registered; it was the worst possible scenario for St Ronan’s Lurgan and a dream start for Omagh CBS who wrapped up the points for this Danske Bank MacRory Cup group game in Augher in the opening quarter.
Danny Fullerton hit that opening goal and the full-forward went on to have a great game with good support up front from Finbar Taggart and Ronan Maguire. All three half-backs were pretty effective over the hour with Rory Donnelly standing out along with midfielder Brian Conway.
St Ronan’s were all at sea in the opening quarter, but they somehow got themselves organised for the second half which ended with each team recording three points. Emmett McKee worked hard in defence and Antoin McParland, apart from scoring three points, tried to get on ball as often as possible.
After bulging the net in the opening seconds, Fullerton added a point before a fine team move from Omagh saw half back Ciaran Daly take a pass off the shoulder and hammer in a second goal.
Fullerton tagged on two points, Conor McGillian another two and then Eoin Montgomery posted two frees and suddenly St Ronan’s trailed by 2-7 to 0-1 with three quarters of the game still to play.
There were only two more Omagh scores before the break and a second point in reply for McParland, but the result was done and dusted.
Omagh ran their bench during the final quarter, but St Ronan’s were competitive for the duration of the second half and probably for the last ten minutes of the first – but the result was beyond them.
